Multiple Indications Order
« on: February 15, 2019, 08:09:35 AM »
Sorry to be asking such basic questions, but all of my theory books got packed into boxes when I moved and they are currently in storage and unavailable.

When you have multiple indicators to apply is there a standard vertical order for the indications?

For example, if you need to place arco and Div. marks is there a standard for which mark should go under the other?

arco and div. should probably be side by side.

but if space is at a premium, consider that the most "important" indication (that which would most affect the sound of a passage) should always go at the top.

so in this case, the div. is almost a given (ie: musicians will assume that separate notes require separate instruments), and if they were capable of playing the passage non-div. it would not affect the sound.

however, if they missed an "arco" indication, the difference in sound would be massive.

Expressive text, ie: "espr.", "con amore", "like a duck laying in wait for its prey", always goes below the music and in italic.
