Thanks Michel for the explanation and lesson~!

"The same goes for 2nds and 7ths (which are, by the way, the same interval)."

I noticed/understood this when I was doing the exercise.

I fear I may have misled Tim with the title of my piece as a "rule-breaking exercise." My apologies.

It was intended facetiously, as obviously when I wrote it I did not think of it as "wrong."

Cheers,

Interesting assignment--and serendipitous! Reminded me instantly of a concert band piece I wrote in 1976 purely as an experiment. I've attached a snippet of that piece. After writing it, I literally put it in a drawer for some 30 years. I entered it into Finale around 2008 and let it sit again. I didn't work on it because I thought it wasn't quite right. This forum challenge made me take another look, so I might work on the piece again--44 years in the making!

Thank you, Mark. It may take a while, but I will post the concert band work after I've revised it. From what I'm hearing in my head these days, it'll be a wind ensemble piece.

Art,

I like it as a percussive piece. I imagine it would sound quite different with wind instruments, although it is kind of brassy.

Cheers,
Jer
