Rejected Membership Requests
« on: July 26, 2019, 05:24:49 PM »
We validate new membership requests by requiring that prospective members provide an email address, and that they respond using that address to our request for some background information. This system has been in place for some years now largely to guard against spambots.

This week we got hit with a flood of seemingly bogus requests (over 30) from a variety of domains, but mostly .ru and.xyz. All of the requests were made over short periods of time and have suspicious usernames, so I've rejected all of them rather than take the time to send over 30 emails when I do not believe I will receive a response.

However, it is possible that among the bogus applications there were one or more legitimate requests.

If you have submitted an application for membership this week and have not hear back from us, please try again.

Spamming operations like we experienced this week are unusual if not rare these days, so I expect that your application will be viewed as legitimate the next time around.

Thanks,

The perceived object...is not a sum of elements to be distinguished from each other and analyzed discretely, but a pattern, that is to say a form, a structure: the element's existence does not precede the existence of the whole, it comes neither before nor after it, for the parts do not determine the pattern, but the pattern determines the parts: knowledge of the pattern and of its laws, of the set and its structure, could not possibly be derived from discrete knowledge of the elements that compose it.

That means that you can look at a piece of a puzzle for three whole days, you can believe that you know all there is to know about its colouring and its shape, and be no further ahead than when you started. The only thing that counts is the ability to link this piece to other pieces...

Good luck with this. Unfortunately, it means that we are unlikely to get any members from Russia as we have been forced to block all membership requests coming from there. Too bad the world has gotten itself into this state. I see one of the blocked Russian IP addresses has had over 300 attempts to access us. That is clearly not a person, but a computer program (a "bot"). We can't be the only site being attacked like this. I wonder how others are faring?

I know this is small consolation, but after years of very little spam in my email I have been getting hit with about a dozen a day all coming from addresses similar to the ones making bogus applications here.
