"Creepy Crawlies," a concert band novelty, Grade 2
« on: February 25, 2019, 03:01:26 PM »
I had some fun with this grade 2 concert band work. I don't often write pieces with gimmickry, but I excused myself for this piece and just let 'er rip.

In the piece's first section, "caterpillars," I tried to capture a caterpillar's undulating, methodical movement. In the second section, "spiders," I went for a spider's sneaky, quick engulfment of its prey. In the third section, "scorpions," the snare drum rim shots symbolize scorpion attacks.

I'm hoping that middle school-aged kids will enjoy this piece and that their audiences will enjoy hearing it.

Comments welcome.

Thanks.

Art, I particularly enjoyed this work. I can visualize some projection of a procession of "crawlies" accompanying this music when performed at a school hall. Not only for the school children but I think this is a lovely set of miniatures for the grown-ups, too. Well crafted, sound music with pleasant melodies, in my opinion; does not sag or falter at any point to my ears.

Marvelous, Art.

I love the groups of instruments entering in imitation, and your builds with the textures getting thicker.

I wonder if the ending could be more dramatic, with a bigger build, and perhaps with reiteration of the other themes.

It makes me want to check my shoes before putting them on in the morning.

Thanks, Jer, for the suggestion.

Yeah, when I walked around at night sometimes, I carried a flashlight--I didn't want to step on one of those nasty things. We haven't had a scorpion in the house now for several years.

Art,

I'm sure its been said before but I'm not really involved in school oriented writing so I don't remember, what age group is grade 2 1/2 oriented to?

As usual, this piece is pleasant enough for the players; however, unlike most of your other pieces, this one seems a bit repetitive to me; but, if its for the youngest players that would be a good thing.

Thanks. The repetitiveness is intentional. I wrote this piece for players with 2-3 years of experience, like a good beginning band or middle school band.
