Indeed, my mind keeps coming back to this topic, like Why AM I doing this again?... and as I think over the question of the creative spark, wondering if for me it is the visual.  An image comes to mind, along with all the inherent emotions,..and then the musical ideas. It is through the music that I have wandered into creating film, to accompany my music of course.  LA

I also love to create videos for my compositions ..... and at times look to old silent movies for a good fit!.

It enhances the pleasure of composing ........

I continue to be focused on learning and expanding my skillset and vocabulary. So pretty much all of my projects (the Sandalwood Nocturnes are an exception) are intended to serve some pedagogical goal involving form or instrumentation or harmony. Once I decide on some or all of these I pick one of the melodic fragments that are constantly bouncing around in my head and develop it.

The perceived object...is not a sum of elements to be distinguished from each other and analyzed discretely, but a pattern, that is to say a form, a structure: the element's existence does not precede the existence of the whole, it comes neither before nor after it, for the parts do not determine the pattern, but the pattern determines the parts: knowledge of the pattern and of its laws, of the set and its structure, could not possibly be derived from discrete knowledge of the elements that compose it.

That means that you can look at a piece of a puzzle for three whole days, you can believe that you know all there is to know about its colouring and its shape, and be no further ahead than when you started. The only thing that counts is the ability to link this piece to other pieces...

old movies....what a great idea and tool for developing skills, as well as the focus on a particular "pedagogical goal" ...thanks for posting...LA

I just love making music.
Listening to music inspires me a lot. Itís often something in the music itself. A mood etc.
That again triggers an idea.
Or a fragment of an idea pop into my head.
Some of these ideas are good and some not so much.
I often hum these ideas for myself and the idea develops. And thatís when the fun starts.
