Lesser Known Composers & Pieces
« on: July 02, 2018, 04:37:28 PM »
Since Mark (mjf1947) and I will be taking over forum administration from Ron in September, I suppose that means we'll be taking responsibility for this thread as well. Since no-one has posted anything for July, I guess I might as well jump in.

I'm always looking for new composers and pieces to broaden my knowledge of the literature, so here's an easy one: who is your favourite lesser-known composer, or obscure work?
The perceived object...is not a sum of elements to be distinguished from each other and analyzed discretely, but a pattern, that is to say a form, a structure: the element's existence does not precede the existence of the whole, it comes neither before nor after it, for the parts do not determine the pattern, but the pattern determines the parts: knowledge of the pattern and of its laws, of the set and its structure, could not possibly be derived from discrete knowledge of the elements that compose it.

That means that you can look at a piece of a puzzle for three whole days, you can believe that you know all there is to know about its colouring and its shape, and be no further ahead than when you started. The only thing that counts is the ability to link this piece to other pieces...

I've always really liked the overture to Wolf-Ferrai's 1 act comic opera Susanna's Secret.

After my orchestra played Dag Wiren's well known Serenade for Strings, I became curious about what other pieces he had composed. As it turns out, he wrote five symphonies - worth a listen.

It's one of my favorites too.  My community orchestra just performed it; although_ at a slightly slower tempo~!

Does it have to be only one? Here are five; all lesser-known, nearly all orient-linked and all worth listening I believe

The French composer Florent Schmitt may not be obscure to some of you, but he was new to me.

Here's his Symphonie Concertante, op. 82.

And felicidades to the new administrators! Thanks so much for continuing this site.

Cheers,
Jer

I think the Armenian/American composer Richard Yardumian should be better know.  He isn't very well represented on the web.  I was trying to find a link to one of his symphonies.  I couldn't.

I did find a link to his Mass "Come, Creator Spirit"
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLVwQL66TiOxviKIgc2z90SUNV-uN9Xibz
which I had not heard before.  It's interesting but not outstanding.  Maybe I'm just remembering him as better than he was.

I am in Halifax at a Duplicate Bridge tournament and to celebrate out 38th wedding anniversary. I borrowed my wife's laptop to check things out, seeing as none of my electronic devices obey my commands. In any case, glad to see this was picked up. Good start. Some of the works listed I have enjoyed in the past, but had forgotten about. Others are unknown to me, but I look forward to checking them out when I get home next week and have  access to my computer which does submit to my humble requests.

Good stuff! Peace to all.
