"Bantering Brass," brass quintet, Grade 3
« on: May 05, 2018, 07:22:10 PM »
Here's my latest brass quintet. I've been on a brass quintet kick for the last six months or so, churning them out. This is my third one.

Comments welcome.

On my YouTube channel:https://youtu.be/mRb8DAvj2gM.

Thanks.

Art,

Can you post the score separately? It's hard to study it going past on YouTube.

Cheers,
Jer

Art,

That is so listenable.

The theme is catchy, the development of it is engaging, with each instrument getting a share (although possibly the trumpets do hog a bit), and the contrapuntal interplay of the instruments is witty.

Lovely piece. Whoever it's for can't help but enjoy playing it.

Cheers,
Jer

P.S. Where has everybody gone? There doesn't seem to be much activity here lately.

Thanks, Jer. I appreciate your comments.

Good question--I don't know where everyone is. I've been busy myself--our daughter is having a baby in August, and we've been agog about it--gender reveal party (it's a girl!), baby shower, and she and her husband want us to stay a while at delivery time to help out.

Jer is right. This is a fun and witty piece. With its melodies and amply imitative/fugato sections it evokes the invigorating and sweet baroque fanfares etc, on the other hand it is deftly jazzed up so that we know today is where it belongs. I think there is every reason this should be popular among the school bands and wish the best of luck!

I'm not happy with the audio quality of the utube vid, however!

Reha

PS. Congratulations Art!

Thank you, Reha. Please tell me--what is it about the audio quality that you dislike? Thanks!

At lower dynamics I hear them somewhat distorted and fluctuating, especially the trumpets. Is it me; some erroneous perception?

I'll look into that. Could be a Finale thing. Thanks.

Art,

I have problems with Finale exporting to audio. Sometimes there is distortion in places.

I think this is due to some kind of unavoidable corruption in the Finale file. I often find that if I go back into Finale, delete and re-enter the offending measures, and re-export to audio, the problem goes away.

Cheers,
Jer

Jer: I sometimes load Audacity along with Finale, play back my Finale file, and record "what you hear" in Audacity. That used to solve many recording problems in Finale when I worked in Windows. I'm in Mac now, and now there are new problems with Finale audio.  ::)

To solve the clipping problems in Finale, I used to set Finale's playback so it didn't produce clipping, which would always be far too soft. Then I'd bring the file into Audacity and normalize it.

As other have said this is a nice enjoyable piece that I'm sure students would have fun playing.
