This is a television program from 1954 in which Leonard Bernstein exposes the working of the 1st movement of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, playing excerpts from passages Beethoven had crossed out. It is an interesting look at how the movement was put together.


The broadcast is broken into 4 segments and to view them all you apparently have to become a member of the site, but there is an option for free membership.

This is an excellent lecture. Typical Bernstein.

I actually had it on vinyl years ago. It came as a bonus record when I purchased a copy of Bernstein conducting the 5th with the NY Philharmonic.

I shall have to watch this.

Just started rehearsing this for our November concert.

Hardest thing is getting the opening bars together.
