I totally get what people are saying about Brahms... EXCEPT for the third and fourth symphonies. Some wonderful stuff in there.

Yeah, after my remark about Brahms, I had that mild compunction for the 4th, thanks for bringing it up  :)

Well, Mozart has his masterpieces, and he has MORE than his fair share of duds.

Well, after all, about 1/3 or more of his pieces were written when he was a child or a teen. My general rule of thumb is that any piece less than around K.250 is juvenilia best ignored.

then Mahler and Wagner.

Wagner is okay. He just needed a good editor.

The problem is not that there's nothing happening during those 15 minutes, it's that there's nothing happening on stage. There's plenty of stuff going on in the pit. It does result in a problematic theatrical experience though.

I tend to also agree with Mozart on this list, though there is one work I simply couldn't live without:

Mozart Piano concerto #23, 2nd mvt

For me I think it would have to be Brahms.
