Very interesting piece ...... love the choice of instrumentation.

Lots of spirit with a bit of darkness!

I'm assuming that the alto flute part is in concert pitch. Then, is the bass part also in concert pitch?

That's a good point Ron, the alto flute is in concert pitch but the bass guitar is transposing. I should have at least mentioned if I'm going to be inconsistent. Good catch. I rely too much on Sibelius; when I press the transposing score button the alto flute part moves but the bass guitar doesn't.

Nice work. As I've said before and will say again, any piece in asymmetrical meters gets a thumbs up from me :).

Good work Seth, the low register flutes and marimba work well together. Could you explain your title?

It would help to clean up your score if you got rid of all the courtesy accidentals where notes are tied across a bar line. They are completely unnecessary and really mess up the appearance. :)

Love it, Seth! Fresh, especially with the instrumentation. I agree with Michel--scoring for clarinet instead of alto flute is an option. Also, I'd probably forget the 3/4 time section around measure 108 and keep building the previous section to an ending. I love the swing effect at the beginning! Nice work!

Good work. I do love the swing effect. I agree with Art regarding the time.
Looking forward to see how this develops.

I agree with the idea others have suggested: clarinet rather than alto flute. My reason is not just the range, but it gives a contrasting timbre to the flute.  Flute vs Alto Flute isn't much of a difference and I wasn't always able to sense the two independent lines of the two flutes. Sometimes it sounded like a trio because the two flute sounds morph into a single entity. By making the other a clarinet, it would create more contrast.   Of course, if the effect you were looking for is a three-way contest of flute-section/marimba/bass, then feel free to discard this comment!

Hi all,

Periwink
Thanks, I'm glad you like it. The title just refers to acoustic group, piece #5. What can  I say, I haven't been spending much thought on names lately.

Art and Morten,
About the 3/4 section at the end. Did you want more of the preceding section or to get rid of the 3/4 or both? What about the 3/4 didn't do it for you? The way I was thinking about it was as a coda to refer back to the material at the beginning of the piece to tie it all together for an ending. I'm guessing it didn't feel like that?

Hi Terence,

I see what you mean about contrasting colors for the flute and clarinet, that section never quite worked for me either. I'll be giving clarinet a listen. Thanks for your comment.

I'm starting to feel like chopped liver.

Aw, 'cmon Michel... Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery...

Yes, we're all jumping on the clarinet wagon.  But to be a bit contrarian, if two flutes is really the sound Seth wants, it might be easy to re-write those few sections that go below the standard flute's range.  Or re-write the higher parts to stay down where the alto flute is more effective and has a sound more distinct from the standard flute.  Besides, you then give a flute player a good reason to dust off the alto flute.
