Title: At The County Fair - for orchestra
Post by: mjf1947 on December 26, 2019, 12:59:45 PM
Hi all ... he's a project I dug up from 7 years past.  My musical ideas with some joint arrangement from a friend who has passed on.

It is still  very "raw"  I just spent a few days reviewing -editing/adding and touching up spots .... much more work to be done.  A couple of holes here and there.

So think of it as a work in the formative stage - progress.  (Many errors still) :P

It's a large project ... so all comments much appreciated.

Mark

PS: engraving still a mess.  :P

Mark,

I just had time for a quick listen.

Early on it feels like an homage to Charles Ives, with the cacophony of sounds of a fair.

Some nice stuff in it, especially the tone colors. It feels like it needs more contrast between sections, with each section having its clear beginning, middle, and end.

Cheers,
Jer

Lots of potential there, Mark.  Keep working on it!  I think that NotePerformer would sound better than the Garritan that you are using.

This composition is way more difficult to move along than I thought.

I am frustrated!

I can't seem to get the clarity I want .... I made lots of attempts with different orchestrations.

Okay .... but if people feel there is potential here.  I'll keep at it.  :-*

 :P Mark

UPDATE:  :o  I went back to the piece ..... and yes .... there's progress  ;D

Deleted update .... harmonic errors.  ::)

Yes, there's potential.  Actually, more than just potential.

Okay .... thanks for the push~!  ;D

For those following this thread ....here's an update.

I am now concentrating my time on the mid-section.

What do you think?  All advice/suggestions, critics welcome.

Mark, I'm following with interest the growing expressiveness of your works. As to this one, I agree with Jer that more contrast among sections would be beneficial. To my ears, the somewhat limited palette of textures creates a growing feeling of sameness, a mild one though.

Thanks for the review ... at this point in time I just want the composition to have some clarity.

It is an old work .... I believe 2012.

My intellectual/emotional investment in it - is not high.

Okay ... I couldn't resist ... for those following this thread here's an update.

For me ... this piece may be understood as a"snapshot" .... a quick pleasant memory.

Please kick me along......................... :-\

Your new version sounds improved.  I wonder if the Garritan sound library is holding you back....if you can post a MusicXML version of the piece, I can run it through NotePerformer to see what happens.

Mark,

That's a big difference. The new version is simpler and clearer.

However, there was a raucousness in parts of the original that I find lacking in this one. It also feels incomplete, as if there's more to come. I guess I want more dirty parts, the ones the men sneak off to see without their wives.

Nice orchestration. But I agree with Jay that Garritan seems to have fallen behind the field.

Cheers,
Jer

Jay,

You did that for me, which I much appreciated. However, the result was disappointing, through no fault of yours.

I've found, after acquiring NP3, that it's not enough to just switch sound sets. NP3 has different defaults and responds differently to articulations than Garritan, so scores require at least some tweaking and in some cases major ones.

For example, NP3 strings are automatically detache, whereas unarticulated Garritan strings tend towards tenuto. When I switch from GPO5 to NP3 I have to add more slurs. NP3 is far more accurate in that account.

Cheers,
Jer

Hi Mark,
Here is a Noteperformer rendering of your piece. Due to importing problems, I left out some unpitched percussion (bass drum, cymbals). Other than that, I did little modification of the score.  I noticed you did some workarounds to get the timpani roll sound - that would be unnecessary with Noteperformer.

Well...well....well.

There is a significant difference in the audio presentation.  What glorious brass!.

Interesting that the library influences the clarity to such an extent.

I may go back and as per Jet make the piece a bit more "dirty".

I am now more invested in the work.

Thanks .... time to upgrade.

Mark

Please note .... as to the completeness of this piece; originally it is part of a suite.

I will post the completed mid-section .....finished 8 years ago and performed.

This is the intro movement.

Jay, Mark,

That sounds fantastic now.

Mark, on another listening, it feels to me like an overture, introducing themes that will later be expanded in the complete work.

Cheers,
Jer

As I said the idea was to have different moments reflecting different experiences at the fair.

This section is called the "Arcade".  The setting is nighttime ....... the protagonist a child going through the thoroughfare.

You might have heard it before ... not sure.

This was performed by my community orchestra.
