The first lesson of the course is online on Youtube - it's a short and basic presentation on how to write melodies for singers.

Alan's YouTube course is up to Lesson 20A, on writing a complete fugue. Even if you don't do the exercises, watching all of his course lessons is a good refresher course on counterpoint. Highly recommended.

one of the most frightening things I ever saw was Professor Belkin, explaining fugue to the class, and then proceeding to - in about 2 minutes flat - write out a whole 4 part fugue on the blackboard, with running commentary as he went about it. it was brilliant.

he is, quite simply, a genius.

I am so sad that his beautiful music gets so little performance.

I completely agree. I really enjoy listening to most of his pieces, particularly his various sonatas.
Information is not knowledge. Knowledge is not wisdom. Wisdom is not truth. Truth is not beauty. Beauty is not love. Love is not music. Music is THE BEST.

Another "completely agree" here!...and a fan of his orchestral works.

So appreciate the introduction to Alan Belkin. Thanks all at Forums.  Now that I finished the Jonathan Biss lectures on the Beethoven Piano Sonatas (thanks to Ron for mentioning those) I will dive into Alan Belkin's courses. I have watched the first on harmony and am eager to
build on my knowledge of all in composition.  LA
