On the Wind - Woodwind Quintet Miniature
« on: January 28, 2018, 12:17:49 PM »
Hi,

Here's another work I found buried in my archives .... so I did a bit of tweaking/reworking .... and now here it is.

I call it a miniature ... since it's a relatively short work.

Not sure what do about it as yet.

Hope you enjoy my endeavors ......................

As always suggestions and more always appreciated.

Please note:  This is a newer tweaked version ... some minor notes changes.

Mark: What a lovely work! Light and appropriately airy. I heard a bit of clipping in measures 7-8. I don't know about that Db in the oboe part or the high F in the bassoon part at the end, even though I like the effects. Only advanced players could manage them, so they make the piece out of bounds for players who could probably handle the rest of the piece.

I would definitely develop this. I think there's ample opportunity at least for a louder, more forceful section and an even quieter, more fleeting section.

Art .... as always thanks for the encouraging words.

You know it's always a pleasure to go back a few years and dig out something previous done and then rework it with a new eye and understanding.

I agree. I've been doing this more in recent years.

Nice little piece.

I don't think that the high F in the bassoon is all that high. I think that any player who is not a beginner student should have no problem.

The high Db in the oboe is a little more problematic. Going above high C is difficult for various reasons and requires a pretty good player.

For myself I think the 6/8 part would be better if it were in 3/4. It would give the music, with very little change, a, to me, more flowing, swingy, feel.

I like the bounciness, the syncopations, the varying timbres.

Sounds like it might work well as part of a longer piece with a cantabile section for contrast.

Nice piece!

I don't see any problem with the Db in the Oboe or the F in the bassoon, that's well within middle school range for those instruments (it's only on D and above that the oboe is finicky).
