Couple Books, Levine and Ulanov
« on: December 03, 2016, 08:43:19 AM »
I find Mark Levine’s The Jazz Piano Book ,  although geared for playing piano, go figure, has a lot of great examples and theory on modern Jazz voicing,   (Sher Music Co.)

Another favorite of mine, although not very useful for composing, is Barry Ulanov’s A Handbook of Jazz  published in 1960 Viking Press.  It makes a good coffee table book. I particularly like the chapter on Jazz lingo, where  you can learn the meaning of such words as  “gut-bucket, daddy-o, clambake etc.

Cheers, AO.
