Hello!
I am a horn player, but I am also very interested in writing my own music. Now I am writing a violin concertino. It is actually my first "serious" composition. Because I am still new at this, any comments from your side would be more than welcome.
You can listen to an excerpt (and also see the score) at this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2OHcG4v_6-g
Thank you! |

| I like the contrary motion at 1:45 and 2:29. The melody is a bit unrelenting at times. Maybe mix it up with parts that aren't so melody driven. |

| Whack47, thank you, I'll try to make some changes you suggested... As I said, composing is something new to me and any comment is very helpful. Thanks for not being too harsh. ;) |

Dave, I don't mean to be "harsh", so please don't take it that way. I'm certain you worked very hard on this piece. However, I found it unidiomatic in writing. It feels like it could have just as easily been a piece for trombone as for violin. Bring it down an octave or two and it fits perfectly. There was nothing that set the music aside as being "hey, this piece is for violin!".
I didn't find the melody "unrelenting". I found it a bit dull. Too square.
I don't know what your musical background is other than that you say you play horn... so why not write a piece for horn? Surely, as a horn player, you would be best placed to understand what it is you would want to perform?
I understand that when we start composing it's tempting to launch into these huge projects (and adding "-ino" to the end of the word "concerto" doesn't make it any less huge), but as a teacher, I highly recommend that you start with something more within your immediate grasp. |

Michael, every critique is welcome from my side, as long as it is constructive.
I don't understand what do you mean with unidiomatic... There are a lot of compostions written for cello that can be played on horn (from composers such as Handel)...
I know that the mellody is a bit dull, as you put it, and I am already working on it. I'm also changing some harmonics to make it a little more interesting.
I don't think that adding -ino makes it any less big, but I chose the title as I'm not planning on writing a classic concerto.
P.s.: My background is that I am a medical student and I am also studying horn at the conservatorium for music. I chose to write something for the violin because my girlfriend (violin player) asked me to. ;) |
